Parasol Island For MTV

These 'Jem' inspired MTV spots animated by Parasol Island for Grey advertising agency are a stark contrast to the work Grey recently produced for Toshiba. I can't wait to see what animated goodness they collaborate on next. In the meantime check out two of the 'Sex Is No Accident' MTV bumps.

Peter Sluszka For Citroen

After recently featuring 'The Chronicles Of Lenoil' on the Animated Review we've been watching a lot of fine examples of pixilation.

Besides from Aardmans Peter Gabriel 'Sledgehammer' music video and 'The Secret Adventures Of Tom Thumb' by the Bolex Brothers, this spot for Citroen animated by Peter Sluszka must be one of the finest examples of the technique we've seen.

Chllngr - Change

Ryan Todd and Chad Turner created this rotoscoped music video for the group Chllngr and their track 'Change'.

Rew Day Trailer

Bulgarian animator Svilen Dimitrov recently released this trailer for his forthcoming short film 'Rew. Day'.

"A day of a man’s life is seen as on a videotape which is being rewound. When he wakes up in the morning he has no idea what lays ahead."

Seed

An egg and an apple build competing broadcast towers that vie for the attention of a transistor radio. With its complex characterization and narrative of animal evolution, competition and reproduction, 'Seed' is a beautiful and sinister stop-motion story about the struggle to survive. Directed and animated by Ben Richardson and Daniel Bird.

'Seed' is nothing short of a masterpiece. It has the aesthetic of Jan Svankmajer, one of my favourite film makers, which isn't at all surprising seeing as Daniel worked for him as a model maker and animator.

Zséman

'Zséman' is a quirky stop motion paper cut-out film made by Hanna Carlson, Milán Kopasz, Maja Szakadát and Nadja Andrasev as part of their fifth semester at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest. The piece was created to answer a lip sync brief, however the dialogue in the film is just gibberish, which is a neat idea for a lip sync project.

The first poster in Mondo’s Studio Ghibli series is from artist Olly Moss, whose work has featured on the Animated Review in the past. Grey For Toshiba

This beautifully shot and brilliantly executed commercial by Grey for Toshiba is the world’s first stop-motion stereoscopic commercial (at least that’s the claim, since there currently isn’t a 3D version of the commercial available online.) The origami models seen in the advert were all crafted by hand and filmed in stop-motion, with no computer manipulation. Watch the advert and making of video below.

Periwinkle Around the World

Aaron Springer created a series of Periwinkle shorts in 2004 for Cartoon Network. Originally intended as a pilot, the network asked him to instead transform it into a series of two-minute vignettes that it wanted to use as cell phone content. They were eventually aired on a short-lived series called Sunday Pants and never shown again... until now.

Kristofer Ström: A Piece Of Christmas

Kristofer Ström directed and animated this festive promotion for Hobby Animation, in which we see Santa chopped into pieces and gift wrapped by his elves... jolly.

Paranorman Second Trailer

A second trailer for Laika’s 'Paranorman' has been released. Combined with the first teaser it gives us a more fleshed out idea of what to expect. So far it's looking pretty darn good.

Persevere through the irritating Garmin advert to see the trailer...

The video was produced by Starburns Industries , the team behind Adult Swim's 'Frankenhole', Community's 'Holiday Episode' and more.

Jan Svankmajer: Surviving Life

'Surviving Life' is the new feature film by internationally acclaimed director and animator, Jan Švankmajer. Using a mix of cut-out animation from photographs and live-action segments, 'Surviving Life' brings with it another extraordinary offering from Svankmajer's unique and surreal vision, told through the darkly humorous story of a married man who lives a double life in his dreams.

Featuring an eye-popping array of giant snakes, chickens, eggs and feet, which constantly pop out of photographed Czech buildings, 'Surviving Life' has been described as an offbeat, 'psychoanalytical comedy'. It premiered at the 67th Venice International Film Festival and will be released in the UK on 2 December 2011 (although I can't find it being screened anywhere yet.)

Glimpse Of The Gruffalo's Childs

These brief clips of the forthcoming 'Gruffalo's Child' short come from BBC compilation spots for their Christmas TV schedule, hence the briefness of the footage and the broken music. Nonetheless they offer an exciting glimpse of what to look forward to come December 25th. I'll certainly be tuning in to watch.

Gruffalo's Child Animation

Studio Soi and the BBC are following up their hugely successful animated version of Julia Donaldson's 'The Gruffalo' from 2009 with 'The Gruffalo's Child' this Christmas. I'm glad they didn't rush out this second film and push for a Christmas 2010 release. It seems they’ve taken their time to re-unite the original voice cast and the animation team at Studio Soi, to create something special and a worthy sequel to the original. I for one can’t wait.

You can watch the half-hour animated film, based on the best-selling children's picture book, at 6:30 Christmas Day on BBC1.

"One wild and windy night, the Gruffalo's child ignores her father's warnings and bravely tiptoes out into the snow in search of the Big Bad Mouse. She meets Snake, Owl and Fox but no sign of the fabled Mouse. He doesn't really exist - or does he?"

If you haven't watched the first Gruffalo short... you should! Studio Soi created a wonderful piece of animation blending real set pieces with CG characters to achieve an aesthetic similar to the Axel Scheffler illustrations seen in the book. Watch the trailer for ‘The Gruffalo’ below, to see what you’ve missed and for a taste of what to expect in ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’.

Andrew Kaiko: Orbis Park

2006 RISD illustration graduate Andrew Kaiko, whose passion for animation work has resulted in 'Orbis Park', his first full animated short since graduating college!

“Orbis Park is my first short as a professional animator since my college senior thesis five years ago. This is an attempt to display the type of animation I always wanted to do and the inspirations that I am affected by every day. It is also the first short where I wanted to gather a more solid crew – basically all of it brought in online.”

84th Academy Awards - Animated Short

Whittled down from the original fortyfour qualifying pictures in the category, here is the official short-list of the ten qualified animated shorts. These ten will be stripped down to the five final nominees for this year’s Academy Award.

•‘Dimanche/Sunday’ - Patrick Doyon
•‘The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore’ - William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg
•‘I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat’ - Matthew O'Callaghan
•‘La Luna’ - Enrico Casarosa

•‘Magic Piano’ - Martin Clapp
•‘A Morning Stroll’ - Grant Orchard

•‘Specky Four-Eyes’ - Jean-Claude Rozec

I'd like to see 'Dimanche/Sunday’, 'La Luna’, 'A Morning Stroll’, 'Paths of Hate’ and 'Wild Life’ make the final five selected for the Best Animated Short award.

I suspect the five final nominations will be 'The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore’, 'I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat’, 'La Luna’, 'A Morning Stroll’ and 'Paths of Hate’...

Bent Image Lab For Bing!

The talented Bent Image Lab created these holiday-themed Rankin/Bass influenced TV spots for the search engine Bing. Here are a couple of the spots:

Airside 1998-2012

After 14 years of creating groundbreaking design, Airside have decided to close their doors for good at the end of March, 2012. To clarify the reasons behind the decision, the three founders, Alex, Nat and Fred have prepared the following statement:

"For the record, we aren’t going bust, in fact we’re currently thriving. We haven’t fallen out with each other, in fact we’re as close as we ever were. What has happened is that after fourteen years of working together we have grown into different people with different goals and despite all of our best efforts we can’t see a way for Airside to move forward and accommodate all of our individual ambitions. You could put it down to musical differences if you like!

The world has changed enormously since we started in 1998 and we feel we’ve been a big part of that change. We were lucky enough to be the first of a certain kind of design company that now feels like the norm. New paradigms are emerging and as individuals we want to explore them in a way that Airside is currently unable to. Our influence has been very clear on a generation of creative practitioners and that makes us feel good; it also feels like our work here is done."

Whilst this is very sad news, I love Airside, I can't wait to see where Alex, Nat and Fred channel their creative talents. In memorandum of Airside I’ve posted some of my favourite pieces of their animated output below...
