Poemotion Book

Poemotion is an interactive book/object. Japanese designer Takahiro Kurashima created abstract graphical patterns that are set in motion as soon as you move the attached special foil across them. With this book the viewer can discover how, as if by magic, figures and forms are created out of optical overlays, set in motion and then disappear again. In the era of digitalization this book shows that interactivity is also possible in the format of the analogous, bound book. Magical!

Belle & Sebastian - Crash

Made to look like papercraft stop motion Stephen Tolfrey created this CGI MV for Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian. The track, 'Crash' (a cover of the song by The Primitives), is taken from Belle & Sebastain's 'Late Night Tales 2.'

Dinotasia Trailer

We never thought we'd get the opportunity to mention our favourite film director Werner Herzog on the Animated Review, but as luck would have it he narrates the forthcoming 'Dinotasia' feature. Co-directed by David Krentz and Erik Nelson, the film features a series of vignettes about dinosaurs – both familiar and some only recently discovered in the past ten years. The film uses CGI to bring the stories to life, but draws on the medium’s birth in silent film and early Disney to create proper, traditional visual story-telling.

Rise Of The Guardians Teaser Trailer

Santa Claus, Sandman, Tooth Fairy, and Easter Bunny take on the forces of evil. This Dreamworks production opens November 21st in the US and here’s the first sneak peek first look at the animation:

Hotel Transylvania Teaser Trailer

This is the first English language trailer for 'Hotel Transylvania' to appear online. We made clear our feeling towards Adam Sandler in our last post about this feature and this trailer does nothing to change our opinion. ‘Hotel Transylvania’ is another fine example of a studio wanting to attach a high profile name to a project with utter disregard for any discernible talent.

Modeselektor – Berlin

New Modeselektor video featuring Miss Platnum, taken from their forthcoming 'Monkeytown Deluxe Tour Edition' album. The video was created by François Chalet, a graphic designer who approached the bands record label (Monkeytown Records) in the hope of having them play his wedding, as luck would have it the label was looking for someone to make a new video, quick! Three weeks hard work later François turned in the video and Modeselektor will play his wedding!

Kottarashky & The Rain Dogs - Demoni

Kottarashky & The Rain Dogs are launching their second album 'Demoni' in May 2012 on Asphalt Tango Records. Theodore Ushev has animated this Blaue Reiter inspired zoetrope-esq music video. It's incredible to think that the entire video was made with 50 vinyl records with the images painted directly on the plates with oil paint, gel paint markers and acrylics - no computer editing was used except for the final editing.

Eugenio Merino Sculpture

Provocative, funny, disturbing and confusing: Eugenio Merino’s art destroys pop icons and notable political figures. Occasionally cartoon characters feature in his work. We've posted a selection of these pieces below:

In 'African Bart' (2005), Bart Simpson's character is transformed into a starving African child. Homer Simpson and Krusty The Clown also feature in Merino's Simpson's sculptures.

In 'The Truth Hurts' (2005) Pinocchio lies lifeless on the floor his nose inverted growing backwards into his skull. Other works including Disney characters... 'The American Friend' with Toy Story's Woody and 'Bambi's Head’ hung like a hunting trophy.

And our personal favourite... 'Supertanga' (2005) starring the PowerPuff Girls posing in thongs!!!

Wes Anderson & LAIKA for SONY Xperia

Wes Anderson, the director of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox,' has recently joined forces with the talented animation studio Laika to direct a series of stop-motion ads for Sony. Titled 'Made of Imagination,' these eye-catching spots for the Sony Xperia smartphone, use animation to illustrate a child’s take on what makes these phones special.

Jung Von Matt For LEGO

German advertising agency Jung von Matt created these simple but clever poster ads for LEGO. The campaign, called 'Imagine', recreates iconic cartoon characters broken down to the most basic elements. Who'd have thought you could construct a recognisable Homer Simpsons with just six LEGO bricks?

The poster series features 'The Simpsons', 'Smurfs', 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles', 'South Park', 'Lucky Luke', 'Asterix', 'Bert And Ernie' and 'Donald Duck'...

Keaton Henson - Small Hands

There's a whole menagerie of woodland creature puppets created by Jonny Sabbagh in Joseph Mann’s music video for Keaton Henson track 'Small Hands'.

Kadavre Exquis: Childhood Of A Circle

Directed and animated by François Grumelin-Sohn aka Kadavre Exquis, a French graphic designer, animator and musician, 'Childhood Of A Circle' transported me back to my youth. The narration especially reminded me of the early morning cartoons I used to watch.

You can also download the beautiful sound track via Bandcamp.

Jiri Geller Sculpture

Finnish artist Jiri Geller has made a career of subverting pop culture icons. These Donald Duck skulls are no exception.

Pierre-Nicolas Bayle: Uprising Teaser

We literally have no idea what Pierre-Nicolas Bayle's 'Uprising' is about, but this 30 second teaser has us begging for more. We love the sci-fi aesthetic and can't wait to see more!

Jorge Jaramillo & Carlo Guillot: RED

'RED' is an animated short, which presents a new version of the classic tale 'Little Red Riding Hood'.

Directors Jorge Jaramillo & Carlo Guillot explore the grim drama, realism and horror of the story, this "dark" take is a current cinematic trend - 'The Dark Knight' films for example. The directors also utilise a style of traditional shadow animation done using modern digital technology again creating juxtaposition between the classic and the contemporary.

We Think Things: Cummulus & Nimbus

We Think Things is a design collective consisting of Pascal Monaco & Felix Meyer, two freelance motion graphics artists from Germany. 'Cummulus & Nimbus' were created as studio mascots, something funny for their showreel. Pascal and Felix enjoyed the characters so much the whole thing grew into this short, which we hope gets developed further still.

Cool Kids - Rush Hour Traffic

The Cool Kids are a firm favourite on the Animated Review stereo! So it's a great pleasure to present the music video for their latest single 'Rush Hour Traffic'. This vivid MV is directed by Joey Garfield and jammed packed with 2D & 3D animation created by the talented Elliot Lim, Jason Esser, Aaron Kemnitzer and Nate Costa.

Edward Hemingways Bad Apple

More and more frequently publishers on Amazon and the like use a promotional video to get people interested in their picture books. Often these are pretty uninspiring, usually just fades between a handful of pages. I was delighted when I saw the promo for Edward Hemingway’s 'Bad Apple' directed by Bowe King at the Mill NY. When the animated promo was complete, Brett Anderson and Jacques Brautbar created original music specifically for the animation.

Wonchan Lee Pixar Prints

Melbourne-based designer Wonchan Lee created this set of minimalist prints featuring Pixar's most iconic characters stripped down to their most basic elements.

Lee said this about the project...

"I wanted to turn the most realistic 3D animation into the simplest vector graphics... Everybody loves Pixar, which means you wouldn't want to do anything to let them down. Because it has really broad demographics, in terms of age bracket and cultural background, it was very challenging to come up with something that pleases such a wide audience whilst satisfying myself as an artist and as a fan of Pixar, too."

KORB's Dancing Coca-Cola

Lithuanian VFX studio KORB have created this unofficial Coca-Cola spot.

“We created this Coca-Cola promo film for Eyeka co-creation community contest... This is what happens when legendary image meets sounds of the harp in sterile neutral space.”

Buck For Good Books

Buck created this spot for Good Books, the online book reseller who gives all their profits to charity. Buck channelled their inner gonzo to create a graphic equivalent of a drug fuelled Hunter S. Thompson inspired rant and possibly the best spot we're likely to see all year.

The Commonist's Twisted Tales

We posted a trailer for Yunyu's music video by animation studio The Commonist back in early January. The full video is now available to view online and it was well worth the wait...

'Dorothy' is the first video in a series of planned releases from The Commonist entitled 'Twisted Tales'. The trailer for what is presumably the second instalment in this series has also been posted online. Watch the trailer for 'The Planetarium' below.

Limpfish Simpsons Paintings

David Barton aka Limpfish has digitally recreated a handful of The Simpsons characters in the style of famous masterworks. Manipulated with photoshop, Barton reworks Apu into Salvador Dalí, Homer with the brushwork of Rembrandt, Groundskeeper Willie in the style of Van Gogh and Marge as The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer.

Hotel Transylvania Sneak Peek

We love Genndy Tartakovsky's work, 'Powerpuff Girls', 'Dexter's Lab', 'Samurai Jack', 'Sym-Bionic Titan'... they're all awesome! However these early images from 'Hotel Transylvania' are less than enticing. The troubled Sony Pictures Animation film, which has had four directors assigned to the project before Genndy, combined with the involvement of the simply awful Adam Sandler gives us the impression it might disappoint. You can read more about the film over at USA Today, but to be honest there doesn't seem to be a redeeming feature about this film.
